BACHELOR OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

Rationale
Unlike traditional business programmes, this programme (BBM) offers a wide range of unique choices of specialized options such as accounting, marketing, banking and finance, insurance and risk management, co-operative management, human resources management and management sciences which are focused on the needs of Kenya„s economic development.

Objectives the Programme
At the end of the training, the graduates will be expected to:
i). Effectively manage resources at their disposal according to contemporary economic, business management and technological trends;
ii). Carry out research in business and management trends with a view to finding solutions to contemporary problems affecting development at various scales;
iii). Appreciate the complex relationship between the national economy and global economic trends; and
iv). Have acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes for pursuing further studies in Business and Management.

Admission Requirements:
i). All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Business and Management (BBM) must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Egerton University.
ii). In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut-off points for the year as determined from any one of the following four cluster subjects from the revised K.C.S.E. structure.

  1. English or Kiswahili
  2. At least any one from the following: History and Government Geography, Christian Religious Education Hindu Religious Education and Islamic Religious Education
  3. Either, Biology or Biological Sciences;
  4. Chemistry or Physics or Physical Sciences Or
  5. Any one of the following: Accounts Commerce or Economics.

iii) Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognised by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
iv) Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in Co-operative Management, Banking, Finance, Agri-Business, Marketing, Insurance and Risk Management and Management Science disciplines passed with a credit or higher or their equivalent. Such cases will be treated on individual merit. Based on Senate approved guidelines, candidates may be allowed to transfer up to a maximum of 30% of the required programme credits from a diploma course or its equivalent from an institution recognised by the University Senate.
v) Admission may also be offered to those holding CPA II and/or its equivalent through mature age entrance scheme as specified by the faculty.

Course Structure and Duration of Study
i). The Bachelor of Business and Management degree programme takes four academic years for full-time students. 6.20 Part time students may be allowed to cover the programme within eight academic years.
ii). Courses taken to fulfill graduation requirements are drawn from a cluster of University Common Core courses and from those specified by Faculties and Departments.
iii). Students will be required to complete a minimum of 36 credit factors each year which will be distributed as follows:
iv). First year, 6 credit factors from University wide courses, 30 credit factors from faculty wide courses.
v). Second year, 36 credit factors from core courses.
vi). Third year, 18 credit factors from core courses, 12 credit factors from specialization options and 3 credit factors from electives.
vii). Fourth year, 18 credit factors from core courses, 15 credit factors from specialization options and 3 credit factors from electives.
viii). The course code are four capital letters namely, BBAM standing for Bachelor of Business and Management, followed by three digits.
1st digit, Indicates year or level the course is offered, i.e. (1,2,3,4).
2nd digit, Indicates the nature of sub-discipline of the course within the discipline.

All the examination of the university shall be conducted in accordance with university statutes stipulated in the university statute No XXVIII.

The grading system will be conducted in accordance with Egerton University statutes XXVIII.

Graduation requirement.
To graduate with a bachelor of commerce, a student shall be required to take and pass all scheduled courses within stipulated time.

Degree classification
The Bachelors degree classification shall be in accordance with Egerton university statute programs statute XXVIII

DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Rationale
Diploma in Business Management enables students to gain a clear understanding of various business disciplines (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Insurance, Human Resource Management and Management Science). This enables then to related various functional areas in the organizations and appreciate the need for harmonizing the activities for various departments. The diploma is a bridge to the degree progamme for many Kenyans who could not secure direct chance to a degree programme in Business. It is a market driven-course which equip students with managerial knowledge and skills that enable them to respond to the changing demand patterns in the market. A graduate who attains a credit or a distinction in the programme is eligible for credit transfer up to a maximum of 30% of total Credit Factors (CFs) in Business of Commerce degree programme.

Programme Objectives
By the end of the training the programme is expect to:
i). Equip graduate with proper managerial skills for effective management of various organizations.
ii). Enable graduates to effectively management resources at their disposal according to contemporary economic business management and technological trends.
iii). Enable graduates to carry out research with a view to finding solutions to contemporary problems affecting business management.
iv). Equip students with skills for careers in the public and private sector.
v). Prepare students for further studies in business field.

Admission Requirements
i). The common University Admission criteria are applicable. In addition:
ii). The candidate must have obtained at lease a mean grade of C (plain) at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) level or Division III at Kenya Certificate of Educate (KCE) or equivalent qualification.
iii). The candidate must have also obtained at least C- (Minus) in mathematics and at least a (C-) (Minus) in English or Kiswahili.
iv). Candidates with mean grade of C (Plain) but have less that C- (Minus) in mathematics and English of Kiswahili can be admitted after bridging in the respective subjects.
v). Candidates with a credit certificate in Business from institution recognized by the Academic Board and having a mean grade of D+ or equivalent in their (KCSE) are also eligible for admission.
vi). Holders of Accounting Technical Certificate (ATC) final level are also eligible for admission.

Course Structure and Duration.
i). The duration of the course is two (2) academic years comprisingof four (4) semesters of seventeen (17) weeks each.
ii). The course coding is four capital DIBM standing for Diploma in Business Management.
iii). The course borrowed from other programmes have codes that reflect those programmes.
iv). The abbreviation is followed by a set of four digits as follows:

1. The first digit zero (0) indicating a diploma programme
2. The second digit is either 1 or 2 denoting the year of course period
3. The third digit indicates the semester in which the course is offered i.e. 1 or 2
4. The last digit indicates the sequencing of the course i.e. 1,2,3.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT

Rationale

The demand for Business Information Management professionals by far surpasses the supply. There are few colleges that offer Bachelor of Business Information Management (BINM) courses in Kenya and few of them meet the required standards. Egerton University has been offering diploma and degree courses in Computer Science which have become highly rated in the job market. With the increasing need for better skills and qualifications, Egerton University therefore needs to extend and upgrade training to cover the emerging technology needs tailored to the customers„ needs in the business environment within organizations and industries thus the BINM programme is meant to fill this gap.

Objectives of the Course
The aim of this course is to prepare graduates to apply an in-depth knowledge of information technology to the business activities of an organization. The course is intended to produce:
i). Personnel for management positions with practical business expertise in solving IT management problems.
ii). Personnel who will be employed in service industry, financial institutions, production organizations, research, consultancy and educational institutions.
iii). Managers who will use IT skills to meet the current management requirements in offices and industry.
iv). Trained personnel who will assist senior managers in the use of IT.
v). Client advisors on the use and application of IT in business applications.

Admission Requirements
i). Candidates for admission into the Bachelor of Business Information Management (BINM) must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirement as stipulated by Egerton University Statutes. The subject cluster will be as stipulated in the criteria by the Joint admission Board (JAB). In addition, the candidates must satisfy either of the following minimum requirements:
ii). Be a holder of KCSE certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ with at least C+ in Mathematics and English/ Kiswahili.
iii). Candidates with credit and its equivalent in Diploma in Computer Science,
Information Technology, Business Management or any other related discipline from institutions recognized by Egerton University Senate.

Course Structure and Duration
i). The Bachelor of Business Information Management (BINM) is a four-year study programme. The BINM programme is to be completed in four (4) academic years or 8 semesters for full-time students and a maximum of eight (8) academic years for part time students.
ii). A maximum transfer of thirty percent (30%) of the Senate-approved Credit Factors towards the requirements for the degree programme will be accepted for graduates of diploma in Information Technology or related discipline, provided the candidate had obtained a grade ‗B„ or above in the specific relevant course. However, the candidate must meet the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Egerton University Statutes.
iii). To qualify for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Business Information Management, a student must have completed and passed one hundred and fifty four point five (154.5) Credit Factors. The C.Fs comprise of ninety six (96) in BINM and fifty eight point five (58.5) from Egerton University approved programmes.
iv). The course codes are four capital letters BINM standing for Business Information Management followed by three digits.

  1. The first digit indicates the year of study i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4.
  2. The second digit indicates the nature of the sub-discipline of the course within the discipline;

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must: Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)\passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent. OR Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination: Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting. OR Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher. OR Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a ‘Credit’ pass or higher or an equivalent Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a ‘Pass’ Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation. AND Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.
