The University of Nairobi has recorded marked improvement in international rankings. In the January 2016 Webometrics Ranking of Universities edition, the University of Nairobi was ranked position in Africa and 697 in the world ahead of all other universities in the region, confirming its place among the academic giants worldwide. This ranking has placed the University among the top 3% universities worldwide out of 24,000 higher education institutions.

According to web ranking indicators, the University was ranked position 2 in Africa on Impact and Openness. Impact measures an institution’s visibility, international collaboration and linkages with other institutions of higher learning. Openness measures the total number of high quality published scholarly works in an institution’s research repository and website representing the academic excellence of the institution. The University of Nairobi was also ranked position 4 in Africa in Presence, which measures the total number of web pages in an institution’s website indicating the richness in academic content.

In the world, the University was ranked position 229 in Openness, position 279 in Presence and position 547 in Visibility.

The rankings confirm the scholarly competitive edge the University of Nairobi has steadily maintained in the world. Over the years, the University has established itself as a world class university committed to scholarly excellence.

The University moved 226 places from its previous ranking in July 2015, confirming its commitment to continuous improvement. Over the years, UoN has steadily risen in its performance in the Webometrics Ranking. In 2012, the University was ranked position 17, scooping position 12 in 2013, 9 in 2014 and 7 in 2015. The University‘s performance is the best result posted by any local university since the advent of web ranking in 2004.

The improved rankings come against the backdrop of the University of Nairobi being the largest, comprehensive teaching and research institution in Africa. Currently, the University’s student population stands at 84,000. Indeed, with 164 Professors, 264 Associate Professors and a research portfolio of KES 4 billion, the University of Nairobi is the incubation point of knowledge for scholars and students. The University has graduated over 180,000 graduands since inception in 1970.
This ranking is indeed a confi rmation that the University of Nairobi has been in the forefront offering quality and holistic education in the region for the past six decades fashioned on a foundation of unity and work (Unitate et Labore).
