Maseno University News Today, Maseno University staff were on Tuesday blocked from leaving their office for almost an hour after they refused to issue certificates to graduated students.

At one moment, the standoff prompted security guards manning the eoffice to threaten to call the police from the nearby Maseno police station.

The students became furious after the staff told them they will not be issuing the certificates because it was past 5 o’clock in the evening.

They complained that it was unfair for the university to mistreat them yet it was officially announced that the certificates will be ready on Tuesday.

“This is not the first graduation they are handling. It is all about a don’t care attitude amongst staff who think students deserve no respect, ” said an aggrieved Mr Kennedy Okello.

TRAVELLED FROM FAR

He accused the staff of being slow and serving the student selectively yet some had traveled from as far as Mombasa, Nairobi and Wajir counties.

“We were to receive the certificates a week after graduation but, two months later, we are still being mistreated, ” said Rachel Achieng’ who opted to return to Nairobi because she had left behind a baby.

The staff who were issuing the certificates said they were willing to work overtime but the students were not organized.

“lssuance of certificates is a delicate matter. We can’t continue with such level of disorganization, ” the officer, who declined to be named said.

He said they could not cope with the number of students who reported for the certificates because they had to verify a number of issues before releasing the documents.

Some of the students who were lucky to get their certificates complained that they had errors despite confirming the correct order of their names before graduation.

They said it was unfair for the university management to take the matter casually.
