Maseno University Strike

Maseno University Strike, Maseno University lecturers have vowed to continue with their strike until the government implements their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

They said the government is expected to pay them up to Sh10 billion.

The lecturers said they had received information that the Treasury had offered more than Sh30 billion to the government to be used in the implementation of the CBA but the government was only offering them Sh10 billion.

They said the Sh10 billion that they had been offered is to be shared among the three university unions which are University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) and Kenya Union of Domestic Hostels Educational Institutions Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) which will see each union receive about Sh3.3 billion.

“What is going around that the government offered Sh10 billion to university academic staff is not true. There are three university unions and the money is to be shared among them. This will see each union get around Sh3.3 billion which, is too small taking into consideration the number of academic staff in universities across the country,” said Dr Wycliffe Odiuor, the UASU chairman Maseno University Chapter.

They accused the government of lip service business saying the government had brought nothing forward to proof that indeed it had offered Sh10 billion increment to them.

“The ten billion the government is talking about is just in paper. They have brought nothing forward to show that they have offered that,” he added.

They promised to stay put with their strike even if it will last for three years warning the government to stop calling them for meetings which are not constructive.

The three Unions UASU, KUSU and KUDHEA have been meeting since Wednesday last week to find a solution to the stalemate.

Public University staff have been on strike for 23 days as learning remain paralyzed in all 33 public universities and their constituent colleges.
