Maseno University Unrest, Maseno University was on Thursday morning shut down indefinitely.Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Director of Public Relations Owen MacOnyango affirmed that the institution was closed to allow students to vote in the upcoming poll. All students were advised to leave the school premises immediately.

In the memo dated 18th, students were asked to leave the institution premises by Thursday 19th to go participate in the presidential election set for next week.”Due to the prevailing circumstances, the University is at this moment closed indefinitely. Students are advised to vacate the school premises,” it read.

However, contrary reports indicate the University was shut down after students disrupted the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) trainings in the region.

The students are reported to have stormed a training session of the electoral officials and interrupted the proceedings before police intervened.

The Commission has in the last three days faced the challenge of training its officials as youth have frequently disrupted several sessions in the Western and Nyanza region.

Maseno becomes the third University to shut down over unclear circumstances ahead of the repeat presidential election.

The University of Nairobi and Mt Kenya University were recently closed over student unrest ahead of the repeat poll.
